How Septoplasty Is Performed

Dr. Mendieta is a double board certified plastic surgeon who has expertise in reshaping the nose for form and function. Septoplasty focuses on the function of the nose; moving the septum to a centered position for improved nasal breathing. Septoplasty is the only permanent solution for deviated septum symptoms, repairing the septum and repositioning the cartilage to open the nasal passages.

Deviated septum surgery can be completed with a closed procedure. The incisions can be made inside the nose, hiding any scars. This is an outpatient surgery, but patients will be under general anesthesia during the procedure. The septum cartilage and possibly bone in the nose are reshaped to create two open nasal passages. This procedure can restore breathing function, but it does not address the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty is needed for nose reshaping and can be performed at the same time as septoplasty.

Recovery from Deviated Septum Surgery

After septoplasty, some nasal swelling and draining are to be expected for 2-3 days. The pain or discomfort is manageable with OTC pain relievers in most cases, but Dr. Mendieta will discuss the best medications for each patient’s needs. A splint in the nose may be needed for 1-2 weeks after the procedure. Patients will want to elevate their head when sleeping to help minimize swelling and promote adequate drainage.
