The septum is the cartilage that separates the nostrils and helps support the bridge of the nose. A deviated septum occurs when the cartilage is deformed or damaged; restricting the nasal passage. A deviated septum can be caused by a congenital defect, injury or disease. This results in restricted breathing through the nose.
Deviated septum surgery (aka: or septoplasty surgery) can repair a damaged septum to restore normal nasal breathing. Dr. Mendieta at 4Beauty Aesthetic Institute for Plastic Surgery is a top facial plastic surgeon who offers septoplasty for deviated septum repair at our medical spa in Miami.
Patients with a deviated septum may have restricted nose function. The displacement of the septum into one of the nasal passages can block the airway and result in a variety of symptoms.
Some of the common symptoms of a deviated septum include:
Patients with a deviated septum can experience nasal breathing and health issues and may also have cosmetic concerns with the appearance of their nose. Dr. Mendieta can address both nose function and cosmetic issues with septoplasty and rhinoplasty.

Dr. Mendieta is a double board certified plastic surgeon who has expertise in reshaping the nose for form and function. Septoplasty focuses on the function of the nose; moving the septum to a centered position for improved nasal breathing. Septoplasty is the only permanent solution for deviated septum symptoms, repairing the septum and repositioning the cartilage to open the nasal passages.
Deviated septum surgery can be completed with a closed procedure. The incisions can be made inside the nose, hiding any scars. This is an outpatient surgery, but patients will be under general anesthesia during the procedure. The septum cartilage and possibly bone in the nose are reshaped to create two open nasal passages. This procedure can restore breathing function, but it does not address the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty is needed for nose reshaping and can be performed at the same time as septoplasty.
After septoplasty, some nasal swelling and draining are to be expected for 2-3 days. The pain or discomfort is manageable with OTC pain relievers in most cases, but Dr. Mendieta will discuss the best medications for each patient’s needs. A splint in the nose may be needed for 1-2 weeks after the procedure. Patients will want to elevate their head when sleeping to help minimize swelling and promote adequate drainage.
A deviated septum can increase the chance of sinus infections and other problems. Many patients experience sinus problem relief after septoplasty with fewer sinus infections and other sinus symptoms.
If you need deviated septum surgery, rhinoplasty can be performed at the same time. You can have both the functional and cosmetic issues addressed at one time for a nose that looks and performs better with only one recovery time. Many patients use this opportunity to change the shape of their nose for a more balanced facial appearance.
Septoplasty alone usually only takes about an hour, but each procedure is customized to the patient. If rhinoplasty is added, it will likely take 2-3 hours.
After the initial recovery of 1-2 weeks, you may notice improved breathing, but it will take several weeks and up to three months for the nasal passage to heal and become completely clear.
